Our client in Oakland County, MI is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Thermal Systems Engineer to join their dynamic energy storage product development team. As a Thermal Systems Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing and developing cutting-edge energy storage solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in thermal system design, familiarity with relevant codes and standards, and expertise in component selection and sizing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate as a standalone role and responsible for owning thermal systems (comprising of HVAC, heat exchangers, fluid transfer, and topology) for battery energy storage systems
  • Architect, mature and develop BESS/module thermal systems from initial product scope and concepts through to design & release of prototype level components and systems
  • Down-select thermal solutions generated based on quantifiable product attributes, system cost and weight
  • Derive performance requirements and develop and release engineering design specifications
  • Develop and mature 3D geometry of HVAC housings, ducts, heat exchangers, fluid transfer components, and fluid routing
  • Innovate, develop, and improve engineering development processes continuously
  • Develop alternative concepts and support or perform trade study analyses
  • Track weight, cost, thermal, and power allocations
  • Prepare Statement of Work (SOW), Critical Item Development Specification (CIDS), Interface Control Document (ICD), and Source Selection Plan (SSP) for a Request for Proposal (RFP) to industry suppliers, or for other purposes as required.
  • Manage supplier design development progress, technical action item list, and transfer of engineering communication; interface with suppliers virtually and onsite; evaluate supplier cost quotes
  • Provide technical oversight and direction to suppliers during design development and validation to ensure performance, test, and/or design requirements are being met.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and proposals; prepare for and present at formal Design Reviews
  • Investigate, respond, and implement corrective action to Production, supplier or field issues
  • Support prototype builds, create test plans, execute tests and create test reports to validate designs, mitigate risks and/or troubleshoot problems
  • Develop plans and estimates for future projects (ROMs, BOEs, project plans, informal estimates) in response to customer and contractual requirements.

Education and/or Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant thermal engineering experience
  • Broad experience with automotive thermal systems (HVAC, chillers, pumps, fans, heat exchangers, etc.) and prototyping.
  • First-principles knowledge of vehicle attributes as it relates to thermal systems including heat transfer, internal flows, durability, vehicle packaging
  • Experience with NX, Teamcenter and Vis Mockup is a plus
  • Basic management skills, including planning and organization, decision making, problem solving, and project management.
  • Strong communication abilities with a preference for working in teams and mentoring engineers.
  • A detail-oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
